Is Financial Coaching Right for the Population We Serve?
Financial coaching can be a strong fit for many individuals and families - but it's not always the right tool for every situation. This section is designed to help partners decide whether Financial Coaching Cats aligns with the needs of the people you serve.
Financial Coaching is Right
Financial coaching may be a good fit if the population you serve:
- Is navigating financial stress, uncertainty, or transition
- Would benefit from one-on-one, conversational support rather than a class or workshop
- Is working toward personal goals (short- or long-term), even if those goals feel unclear at first
- May feel hesitant, overwhelmed, or unsure about where to start with money
- Values choice, privacy, and dignity in support services
Coaching works well when individuals are looking for space to think, reflect, and plan - rather than being told what to do.
Financial Coaching is NOT Right
Financial coaching may not be the right fit when:
- Immediate crisis support is needed (such as emergency financial assistance, legal intervention, or mental health crisis services)
- The primary need is technical advising (for example, investment recommendations or tax filing assistance)
- Participation would feel required rather than voluntary
In these situations, Financial Coaching Cats can help identify appropriate referrals or work alongside existing services rather than replacing them.
How Does Coaching Compliment, Not Replace?
Financial coaching is most effective when it's part of a broader support ecosystem. Partners often find that coaching helps the individuals and families they serve:
- Make better use of existing resources
- Follow through on referrals or action steps
- Build confidence and self-efficacy over time
- Feel more engaged and supported across programs
Coaching doesn't duplicate case management, education, or advising - it adds a human, reflective layer that helps people connect the dots.
